When a client asks “what kind of downlight do I need?” the honest first question back is: what kind of ceiling do you have? Because half the downlight decision is made for you by the ceiling before you even open a product catalogue.
This piece explains the two dominant downlight formats — recessed COB downlights and surface cylinder lights — when each is the right call, and where people commonly get it wrong.
The Fundamental Difference
Recessed downlights mount inside a cut-out in the ceiling — the fixture body sits above the ceiling plane, and only the trim + light source shows below. Common in false-ceiling constructions where there's plenum space (100mm+) above the visible ceiling.
Surface cylinder lights mount directly onto the ceiling surface — no cut-out required. The whole fixture body is visible, hanging below the ceiling plane. Common where ceilings are concrete/RCC with no plenum space, or where a deliberate architectural “hardware-on-ceiling” look is wanted.
When to Choose Recessed
- You have a false ceiling (gypsum, mineral fibre, metal tiles). Plenum space above lets you drop the fixture body cleanly out of sight. Result: flush, minimal ceiling — the light appears to emerge from a hole in a flat plane.
- You want the minimum visual intrusion. Recessed downlights are almost invisible when off — the trim is all you see. Ideal for premium residential, high-end retail and hospitality where design language wants clean surfaces.
- You have anti-glare requirements. Deep-recessed anti-glare COB downlights hide the light source from oblique angles — the person walking by doesn't see a bright disc, just softly-lit floor and walls.
- The install is coordinated with the ceiling contractor. Recessed installs need cut-out sizing before ceiling closure — getting the fixture spec locked before the ceiling grid is finalised is critical.

When to Choose Surface Cylinder
- You have a concrete / RCC ceiling with no plenum. This is the classic use case — older apartments, industrial-style spaces, retrofit projects where breaking the ceiling for recessed housing isn't feasible.
- You want a deliberate architectural / industrial look. Contemporary cafes, modern retail with exposed ceilings, hospitality spaces going for a “raw” aesthetic use surface cylinders as visible design elements.
- You're retrofitting an existing space. Adding surface cylinders is a same-day install — no ceiling opening, no plaster patch-up, no dust. Recessed installs need days of ceiling work.

Installation Complexity & Cost
Assuming a 12W COB fixture:
- Recessed downlight material + ceiling cut + install labour: ₹800–1,600 total per point
- Surface cylinder material + install: ₹700–1,400 total per point (labour is faster — screw mounting + wiring)
Where recessed pulls ahead: labour is faster if the ceiling is being built new — the electrician and gypsum contractor coordinate cut-outs during ceiling install, no separate step. Where surface pulls ahead: retrofit into finished ceilings and RCC construction.
Common Mistakes
- Speccing recessed for a concrete ceiling. Even 100mm of concrete depth is enough — but retrofit cut-outs into cast concrete are structurally invasive and prohibitively expensive.
- Speccing surface cylinders under 2.4m ceiling height. Low ceilings make surface cylinders visually oppressive — you feel the fixture hanging over you.
- Mixing recessed and surface in the same visible zone without a design reason. Reads as unresolved. Pick one primary and use the other only where forced by ceiling constraint (e.g. a corner beam that can't take recessed).
- Under-speccing surface cylinder wattage. Because the fixture is visible, people intuitively spec lower wattage. The light output should match the room, not the aesthetic.

Which is cheaper — surface or recessed downlights?
For same wattage and quality, surface cylinders are slightly cheaper in fixture cost and significantly cheaper in retrofit installation. For new-build coordinated installs, the total delivered cost is roughly comparable.
Can I convert recessed downlights to surface cylinder?
Yes — if your existing recessed fixtures are being replaced anyway, mounting a surface cylinder over the existing cut-out (with a plate or trim) is a common retrofit path. Some cylinders are designed specifically to sit over existing 90–100 mm cut-outs.
Do surface cylinder lights run hot?
Well-engineered surface cylinders use aluminium heat-sink construction to dissipate heat safely without needing plenum space. Cheap surface cylinders without proper thermal design can run hot — specify a manufacturer with quality driver + heat-sink credentials.
Which is better for anti-glare?
Recessed downlights, specifically the deep-recessed anti-glare COB variants. The deep reflector geometry hides the light source from oblique viewing angles — you won't see a bright disc from across the room.
Can I mix surface and recessed in one home?
Yes — the common pattern is recessed downlights in false-ceiling rooms (living room, bedrooms, corridors with drop ceiling) and surface cylinders in rooms with concrete ceilings (kitchen with exposed RCC, home office in a concrete building). Just don't mix within one visible zone without a design reason.
