What IP Actually Stands For
IP stands for Ingress Protection — an international standard (IEC 60529) rating how well an enclosure resists solid objects (dust, fingers, tools) and liquids (splashes, jets, submersion). It's written as IP followed by two digits: the first digit rates solid-particle protection (0–6), the second rates liquid protection (0–9).
So IP65 means: 6 (fully dust-tight) + 5 (protected against water jets from any direction). IP68 means: 6 (dust-tight) + 8 (protected against continuous submersion beyond 1 metre depth, tested per manufacturer spec).
