A showroom needs a layered fixture plan, not one product repeated everywhere. This guide breaks the plan into the four layers every retail space actually needs, category by category, so you can walk into a fit-out with a real specification instead of guesswork.

The Four Lighting Layers Every Showroom Needs
Professional retail lighting is built in layers, each doing a different job:
- Ambient layer — general illumination so the space is usable and safe. Usually LED panel lights or wide-beam COB downlights.
- Accent layer — draws the eye to specific merchandise. This is where track lighting and narrow-beam spots do the real selling.
- Task layer — billing counters, trial rooms, tailoring stations. Needs higher lux and accurate colour rendering.
- Architectural layer — wall grazing, cove lighting, signage backlighting. Sets the mood and brand identity.
Skip any one layer and the store either looks flat (no accent) or looks like a warehouse (no ambient) or feels cheap (no architectural layer). The plan below assigns SOLID product categories to each layer.
Ceiling / Ambient Layer — LED Panels & Downlights
Start with the ambient layer at 200–300 lux for general retail (below task and accent zones). Slim LED panels at 18–24W work well for a false-ceiling grid; where the ceiling is concrete or exposed, use surface cylinder lights instead — no cut-out needed.
- 4000K neutral white across the ambient layer — doesn't compete with warmer accent lighting, keeps colours true
- Spacing: roughly one 18W panel or downlight per 25–30 sqft for even general coverage
- Avoid overlap with the accent layer — ambient light should be the quiet backdrop, not compete with track spots for attention
Track / Accent Layer — Where the Selling Happens
This is the layer that makes merchandise look desirable. Use COB track lights on rails positioned 600–750mm from the merchandise wall, angled at roughly 30° to avoid glare while still punching light onto the display.
- Jewellery & small hero items: narrow-beam mini spots, 15–24° beam, 3000K warm white
- Mannequins & wall displays: 20–30W track heads, 24–38° beam, high CRI
- Full clothing racks: wider 38–60° beam wash lighting to cover the whole rack evenly
- Rule of thumb: accent lighting should be 3–5× brighter than the ambient layer at the merchandise surface — that contrast is what makes products “pop”
Task Layer — Counters, Trial Rooms, Tailoring
Billing counters and trial rooms need consistent, glare-free light where staff and customers actually look closely at product, fabric or payment screens.
- Billing / cash counter: 400–500 lux, 4000K, anti-glare recessed COB downlights directly overhead
- Trial rooms: this is the make-or-break zone for apparel retail — use flattering 3000K warm white at higher lux (500+) with minimal shadow, ideally from two angles (overhead + side) to avoid harsh under-eye shadows
- Tailoring / alteration counters: highest lux in the store (750+), cool 5000–6500K for precise stitch and fabric detail work
Architectural Layer — The Finishing Touch
The architectural layer is optional in a tight budget but is what separates a premium-feeling store from a functional one.
- Wall grazing: low-profile linear or surface fixtures angled to wash a feature wall — texture becomes visible, adds depth
- Cove / ceiling coffer lighting: warm 2700–3000K strip lighting recessed into a ceiling drop, invisible source, soft glow
- Signage backlight: even, diffused illumination behind the brand signage — avoid visible hot-spots
None of these need to be expensive — even a modest cove-lit reception wall changes how the whole store is perceived on entry.

- 18–22 × 18W recessed panels/downlights (ambient layer)
