Walk into a lighting showroom and you will hear both terms — COB and SMD — used interchangeably by salespeople. They are not the same, they behave differently in your ceiling, and picking the wrong one for the space costs you glare complaints, replacement calls and money.

The Simple Technical Difference
SMD stands for Surface-Mounted Device — individual small LED chips soldered onto a PCB in an array. Look at a typical SMD downlight and you'll see many small dots inside the reflector.
COB stands for Chip-on-Board — many LED dies mounted directly on a single substrate, encapsulated as one glowing surface. Look at a COB downlight and you'll see a single bright disc.
SMD = many small light sources. COB = one dense light source. That physical difference drives everything else — beam quality, glare, colour rendering, heat, dimming behaviour and cost.
Where COB Wins
COB downlights outperform SMD in five practical scenarios:
- Focused, controlled beams. A single dense LED source pairs with a precision reflector to give a sharp, tight beam — ideal for accent lighting, retail displays, artwork, jewellery highlighting.
- Anti-glare recessed lighting. The recessed COB with deep reflector geometry hides the source from direct view — no bright dots peeking from a low angle. Better visual comfort in living rooms, hotel corridors, retail aisles.
- High colour rendering (CRI ≥ 90). COB modules typically achieve better colour uniformity across the beam. Skin tones, food, fabric and merchandise look truer.
- Long throw with narrow beam angles. 24° and 15° COB spotlights punch through 3.5–4 metre floor-to-ceiling heights without spreading and losing intensity.
- Longevity. A well-designed COB with proper heat-sink runs cooler per lumen than a compact SMD array — longer effective life.

Where SMD Wins
SMD isn't obsolete — it wins in these situations:
- General ambient lighting. Where you want soft, wide, wash-style illumination (bedrooms, generic office ceilings, warehouse-lite) — SMD arrays spread the light naturally.
- Slim LED panels. LED panel lights universally use SMD chips edge-lit or back-lit — you can't build a slim 600×600 panel around a single COB. See our LED panel light range.
- Cost-sensitive projects. For pure lumens-per-rupee at wide beam angles, SMD is usually 15–30% cheaper than COB at the same wattage.
- Multi-colour / RGB. Individual SMDs can carry different colour LEDs (RGB), enabling colour-changing fixtures like our Double Color LED Panel.
Application-by-Application Guidance
Rather than picking chip type first and application second, work backward from the space:
- Living room: Anti-glare COB downlights, 3000K, 12W. Adds focused pools of light plus a couple of surface cylinders for accent walls.
- Kitchen work surfaces: COB downlights with 60° beam, 4000K, over the counter. SMD panels for general kitchen ambient.
- Retail showroom (jewellery, fashion, cosmetics): COB spotlights on track, 24–38°, CRI ≥ 90, mostly 3000K with 4000K on display walls.
- Office open work area: SMD LED panels, 4000K, 600×600 or 600×1200.
- Hospital wards and corridors: Anti-glare COB downlights + SMD panels in patient rooms. Never bare high-intensity SMD in a patient's line of sight.
- Restaurant / hospitality dining: Warm 2700–3000K COB downlights with narrow beam for table drama, plus surface cylinders on walls.

For a like-for-like comparison at 12W:
- SMD 12W downlight, mid-quality brand: ₹350–550
- COB 12W anti-glare downlight, comparable quality: ₹550–900

The 30–50% price premium on COB pays off wherever visual comfort, colour accuracy or long throw actually matters. In a bedroom ceiling where the light is background, the premium is wasted. At the same wattage, well-designed COB and SMD chips produce similar total lumen output. COB concentrates its light into a tighter, more intense beam. SMD spreads more evenly. So COB feels brighter at the beam target; SMD feels brighter across the whole room.
Is COB more expensive than SMD?
Yes — at the same wattage, COB downlights are typically 30–50% more expensive than SMD equivalents due to the more complex chip and reflector engineering.
Which lasts longer — COB or SMD?
A well-engineered COB downlight with proper heat management typically outlasts a comparable SMD by 10–20% because a single die-cast substrate dissipates heat more efficiently than many tiny SMD packages.
Can I dim COB and SMD downlights?
Both can be dimmed if the driver supports dimming. Not all downlights ship with dimmable drivers by default — specify “dimmable” explicitly and confirm compatibility with your dimmer type (Triac, 0–10V, DALI).
For anti-glare downlights, is COB always better?
Yes. Anti-glare recessed geometry works best with a single point source and a deep reflector. Multi-source SMD downlights, even inside a reflector, tend to show hot dots at oblique angles.
